David Montgomery obtained a B.A. in psychology from the University of Virginia in 1969. He then graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law with a Juris Doctor, with honors, in 1972. That same year he was admitted to the Georgia bar and formed the law partnership, Hudson and Montgomery, with Jim Hudson.

Montgomery’s practice has always consisted primarily of trying cases in court. He successfully tried his first criminal case, a week-long trial in the federal court, in 1972, three weeks after becoming a lawyer. He tried his first wrongful death case in 1973, representing the husband and children of a wife and mother who died of a heart attack after a minor traffic accident. That case resulted in what was then a record recovery for the value of a single life in Clarke County, Georgia.

In the first 20 years of his practice he handled both civil and criminal cases. Since 1995, with a few exceptions, he has focused on serious civil cases, either representing the injured and the families of those killed by the negligence of others or handling contested commercial disputes. Whether handling a civil case or defending someone charged with a crime, his entire career has consisted of preparing cases for trial and presenting them in court before judges and juries. Many of the clients he has represented have come to him either because of referrals from jurors who have seen him in court or by referral from other lawyers.

Whatever the type of case, David Montgomery’s approach to the law and the representation of his clients has remained constant over the years. That approach, simply put, is to work tirelessly and honorably to do the very best job possible for those who have entrusted their lives and their legal affairs to him.

David Montgomery has held the AV rating from Martindale-Hubble, the highest rating possible, for more than 25 years. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer each year since 2004. He has been listed in the directory, Best Lawyers in America.

He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, the American Bar Association, the Western Circuit Bar Association, and is a Fellow of the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia.

He is active in his community. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Athens Academy from 1992 to 1997, was a member of the City Council of the City of Lexington for many years and served as Mayor.

He is a licensed pilot, with instrument and multiengine ratings.
